WYNYARD QUARTER

WYNYARD QUARTER

Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter is a stunning example of sustainable urban design, where natural beauty meets environmental responsibility. Nestled along the city’s iconic waterfront, these carefully curated garden beds feature native plants that thrive in a bespoke growing media designed by Living Earth.

The challenge was to create an engineered soil mix that not only nurtured plant life but also improved water quality. Rainwater washing off roads often carries contaminants, and the solution lay beneath the surface—Living Earth’s specially formulated raingarden media. This mix was developed to filter and cleanse runoff before it entered Auckland’s stormwater system, ensuring a cleaner harbour.

Collaboration was key. Working alongside Waterfront Auckland, Architectus, Designflo, and Hawkins Open Spaces, Living Earth crafted a high-infiltration soil blend tailored to meet the project’s specific needs. Extensive testing with Landcare Research confirmed its performance, and today, more than six years later, these raingardens continue to flourish.

The success of Wynyard Quarter Gardens highlights Living Earth’s expertise in creating custom soil solutions that enhance both sustainability and urban aesthetics. By turning organic waste into high-performance growing media, we help shape greener, cleaner spaces across Aotearoa.
